"Butch" Darwin Leroy Vergason Jr., age 76, passed on May 28, 2025.
Butch was born in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, on March 8, 1949, to Darwin Leroy Vergason Sr. and Anna Louise Gregory Robertson. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he followed his calling and attended Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in Pineville, Kentucky and was an ordained minister.
Butch was a man of many passions over the years. He loved to work with his hands—whether fixing something, building, welding, or simply tinkering in his shop, he found joy in creating and understanding how things worked. He was endlessly curious, always eager to learn more about the world around him through reading, watching documentaries, or simply asking questions. He was a lifelong seeker of knowledge.
A true outdoorsman, Butch felt most at peace surrounded by nature. In earlier years, he was an avid fisherman and hunter who cherished quiet moments in the woods or the thrill of his latest catch on the river. Though in recent years he was no longer physically able to hunt or fish, his love for the outdoors never faded. He had a gift for storytelling—animated, warm, and full of humor—and his tales, many drawn from his time in nature, were well-loved by family and friends alike.
Above all, Butch cherished the Lord Jesus Christ, whom he loved with all his heart. His faith was central to who he was, and he lived it daily with humility and devotion. As a faithful member of Enon Baptist Church, he often sang hymns, shared scripture, and offered wisdom rooted in a deep, abiding faith. That same love and faithfulness extended to his family—he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His presence was a blessing to all who knew him, and his legacy of faith, love, and kindness will live on in the lives he touched.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie Vergason. They were married April 6, 1990.He is also survived by five children: Adam Vergason (Gina), Brandon Vergason (Amanda), Janie Vergason (Daylen Hebert), Nathan Kachnavage (Laura), and Matthew Kachnavage (Andrea); eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Butch's honor may be made to Enon Baptist Church, 4378 W, Enon Church Road, Salem, IN 47167, where he was a faithful member.
