Elsie L. Butler, age 94, passed away May 6, 2025 at her home in Salem, IN. Elsie was born November 10, 1930 in Sample, KY to Dee and Georgie Early.

On January 19, 1948 she married Merle H. Butler in Heyworth, IL. He preceded her in death in 2005.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen (John) Walton of Sellersburg, IN, and Angela Nicholson of Salem, IN. She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis A. Butler in 2019. She is survived by four grandchildren, Jacqueline Letson of Mt. Juliet, TN, Matthew Walton of Wendell, NC, Adrian Brown of Salem, IN, and Ashley Fugett of Trafalgar, IN., seven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by two brothers, Marvin Early and William Early.

Four brothers preceded her in death: JD Early, Leslie Early, Gene Early, Chester Early.

Five sisters preceded her in death: Christine Koester, Mary Ruth Rogers, Jane Claycomb, Linda Lucas, Darnell Gibson.

Elsie was born into a large family where she learned the importance of faith, family, hard work and compassionate care giving. Seeing her maturity at a young age, a neighbor hired her to clean their house when she was only 11 years old. Elsie was the go-to person in the family in times of need by stepping in to provide, help, comfort, medical recovery, and loving assistance any way she could.

Elsie had a heart of compassion especially for those needing help late in life. She worked at the former Williams Convalescense Center for several years as an aid. Many times, on her days off she would go help patients she knew needed additional care.

She frequently enjoyed worshiping online with the Passage Church in Wendell, NC where her grandson is the Pastor. Elsie demonstrated her Christian faith through the kind of life she lived daily.

There will be no service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
