Ernest "Ernie" Morris of Salem, Indiana was born on September 25, 1941 in Barbourville, KY to Walter Lee and Mayme Smith Morris and passed away at his home in Salem, IN on April 28, 2026. Ernie and his family moved to the New Philadelphia area in Washington County, Indiana in 1942. In 1947 they moved to a farm located three miles west of Salem, Indiana on Highway 60, where his family farmed thirty-two acres and remained until his parents passed.
Ernie became of member of Mill Creek Baptist Church October 3, 1953 and later moved his membership to New Hope Methodist Church.
After Ernie graduated from Salem High School in 1959, he began working at Travler's Radio Corporation in Orleans, Indiana.
On June 9, 1962, Ernie married Mary Alice Marshall and they moved to Terre Haute, Indiana so Ernie could finish his education. Upon completion of BS and MS Degree from Indiana State Teachers College, Ernie returned to Washington County and accepted a teaching position at Campbellsburg Junior High where he taught math and woodworking.
He remained at Campbellsburg Middle School until there was an available position in his field at Salem Community Schools. He came to Salem in 1968 and taught there until 1991. At Salem High School, he taught Industrial Arts and welding classes for adults. He also taught at Salem Middle School in the areas of science and geography.
In 1991, Ernie chose to leave Salem Community School and pursue his own business venture designing and building custom wood furniture. He named his company Mor-Wood Products and kept quite busy, enjoying every moment.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Alice Marshall. He also is survived by his children, LaDonna Martin (Mike) and Jonathan "Jon" Thomas Morris. Ernie has two grandchildren, Evalyn "Eva" Louise Martin Pedigo (Austin) and Laura Mae Martin Farley (Preston).
Ernie is also survived by the following nephews: Jimmie Lee Morris, Gary Haley, Rodney Craig (Sherri) and Mark Marshall (Stacey).
Ernie is also survived by the following nieces: Barbara Jean Clark, Janet Riddle (Randy) and Pamela Nolan (Kenny), Katrina Catterton (Paul Sr.) and Marsha Myers (Danny).
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Lee and Mayme Morris, his siblings: Leman Morris (Dorothy), Thelma Haley (Isom), and Berniece Andrews as well as a niece, Lisa Morris and a nephew, Mark Morris.
Those that knew Ernie remember that he was very quiet, shy, and never boastful. Ernie preferred to be in the background rather than out front. He was always kind and considerate of others, and always ready to help when needed. He had great admiration for perfection and expected everyone to give their best.
Services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 11:00A.M. at Weathers Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday evening, from 4:00-8:00P.M. at Weathers Funeral Home and Friday morning from 9:00A.M. until the time of service. Burial will take place following the service at Crown Hill Cemetery.
