Norma Jean Chastain

March 29, 1931 — April 24, 2026

Salem

Norma Jean Campbell Chastain joined her husband, son and many relatives on April 24, 2026. Born March 29, 1931, to Alexander and Elna Martin Campbell, graduating from Polk Township School in 1945 and Pekin High School in 1949. In 1949, she married Donald N. Chastain and moved from Pekin to Vernon Township. Her life was dedicated to her family, serving others, her faith and working with Donald on the farm while rearing two sons - Mark Ellis and Douglas “Scott”. She and Donald attended many years at Senior Saints in the Smokies at Johnson Bible College, Knoxville, TN; totaling 27 years for Jean. When her boys started school, she began working as a Cook at Vernon Township school, Secretary at West Washington Elementary School, Salem Title before retiring in 1990 as Secretary of Mt. Tabor Christian Church. Jean served as the Corresponding Secretary and Forwarding Agent for Brazil Christian Mission for many years.

Jean was a special lady – enjoying gardening, quilting, being outdoors, watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow into talented children in drama, dance, football, baseball, choirs and golf. After 13 years being widow living alone, she decided to move to Oswego, IL to live with her son and daughter-in-law – Mark and Diane. During those 5 years she was active in her 4 great-grandchildren’s activities with special memories of watching game shows and being outside with them. She left a special place in the hearts of her church in Oswego and remained faithful watching online. She liked to tell people to call her – “Mean Jean”, while possessing not a single mean bone in her body.

Upon, her son Scott’s sudden death in 2023; Jean moved to Bruceville, IN to be near his children – Courtney and Austin. Once again, Jean was active in participating in her 4 great-grandchildren’s. Going to ‘Memaw’s” house for the cookies, games and artwork were a joy for all of them.

She returned back to Washington County on April, 21st and enjoyed seeing family and friends who stopped by before her death on April 24th.

She is survived by her Son Mark (Diane) Oswego, IL; Grandchildren – Heather (Brian) Parker, Naperville, IL; Blake (Emily) Oswego, IL; Courtney (Erich) Bauer, Bruceville, IN; Austin Chastain, Evansville, IN; Great-Grandchildren – Bennett, Posey and Phoebe Parker; Sophia Chastain; Brayden, Liam, Aiden and Remi Bauer; in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
